Gillian Sparks, BA

Research Coordinator, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Washington

As a research coordinator for the BRiTE Center, Gillian oversees participant recruitment and manages study operations for a project focused on developing data-driven clinical signatures for individuals experiencing hallucinations. This research aims to improve the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of severe mental illness. In her role as a clinical assessor, she administers study procedures, provides technical support, and guides participants through all phases of the study. Her work involves close collaboration with clients who experience hallucinations, ensuring they are supported throughout their participation.

Gillian graduated with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Business from the University of Washington. She remains actively involved in research with the Human Interaction with Nature and Technological Systems (HINTS) Lab, collaborating with team members to develop a qualitative coding system that explores how interactions with various types of nature can enhance Presence, a state of optimal awareness. During her undergraduate studies, Gillian was also a research assistant for the Center for the Study of Health and Risk Behaviors (CSHRB) on Project ACE, investigating alcohol cue reactivity. Gillian currently volunteers at Crisis Connections where she has developed de-escalation techniques to address crises and empower callers to have autonomy in creating their own coping plans. Her work with the BRiTE Center aligns with her interest in advancing accessible mental health care.

In her free time, Gillian can be found practicing her spike with her volleyball team and taking photos of birds at the marsh.
